Fungia coral, commonly called Plate Coral, is a free-living large-polyp stony (LPS) coral admired for its circular, disc-like shape and vibrant colors. Available in shades of green, brown, red, or purple, Fungia adds striking focal points to reef aquariums and displays unique polyp movement when feeding.
Lighting Requirements:
Moderate to high lighting is ideal, depending on coloration.
LED, T5, or metal halide lighting works well.
Acclimate gradually to higher light levels to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow:
Moderate, gentle flow is best.
Strong currents can damage the delicate tissue; insufficient flow may allow detritus to settle on the coral.
Feeding Requirements:
Fungia contains zooxanthellae for photosynthesis but responds well to supplemental feeding.
Offer meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or finely chopped seafood 1–2 times per week.
Target feeding enhances polyp extension, coloration, and overall health.
Tank Placement:
Fungia is free-living and can sit directly on sand or rubble.
Ensure enough space around the coral to prevent contact with other corals, as it can extend sweeper tentacles.
